Overview
Vedic literature is a collection of numerous ancient Hindu scriptures written in early Sanskrit. The term 'Veda' means 'knowledge' and the literature is considered a primary source of knowledge about the Indian civilization and the Vedic period. It's also the oldest written documents of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. These scriptures are broadly classified as
1.Shruti: consist of Vedas, Upvedas, Vedangas
2. Smriti: composed by sages from memory to provide moral and legal duties, rituals etc.
3. Puranas: few important puranas are PadmaPuran, ShivPuran, BhagavataPuran, AgniPuran
4. Agam: Three types of Agamas are Vaishnav Agam(215), Shaiva Agam(28), Shakta Agam(77)
5. Darshanas: Six darshanas are Sankhya, Nyay, Mimansa, Yog, Vaisheshik and Vedant
6. Itihas: Two historical epics are Ramayan, Mahabharat (includes Bhagvat Gita).
