Overview

Adityahridayam is a powerful mantra in praise of the Sun, which appears in the Yuddha Kanda (Chapter 6) of Valmiki Ramayana. When Lord Rama stands on the battlefield to fight Ravana and is tired of fighting Ravana's warriors, Sage Agastya advises him to worship the Sun. Sage Agastya tells Rama that if he worships the Sun God, he will be victorious and will be able to destroy all enemies.
This stotra dedicated to Lord Sun infuses power, energy and wisdom within a person. Regular recitation of Adityahridayam stotra relieves many troubles of life and increases mental and physical strength. It is also considered very important in astrology. It is believed that by reciting it every morning, all the sorrows and pains of a person are removed and he is filled with new energy and self-confidence.

1. ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम्। रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्॥१॥

tato yuddhapariśrāntaṃ samare cintayā sthitam। rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam॥1॥

Here Shri Ramchandraji was standing in the battlefield worrying tired of the war. In this, Ravana appeared in front of them for the war.

2. दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम्। उपगम्याब्रवीद् राममगस्त्यो भगवांस्तदा॥२॥

daivataiśca samāgamya draṣṭumabhyāgato raṇam। upagamyābravīd rāmamagastyo bhagavāṃstadā॥2॥

Seeing this, Lord Agastya Muni, who had come to see the war with the gods, went to Shri Ram and said

3. राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम्। येन सर्वानरीन् वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसे॥३॥

rāma rāma mahābāho śṛṇu guhyaṃ sanātanam। yena sarvānarīn vatsa samare vijayiṣyase॥3॥

Ram! Ram! Great! Listen to this eternal secret Sanatan Stotra. Child! By chanting it you will get victory over all your enemies in battle.

4. आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्। जयावहं जपं नित्यमक्षयं परमं शिवम्॥४॥

ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam। jayāvahaṃ japaṃ nityamakṣayaṃ paramaṃ śivam॥4॥

The name of this secret hymn is 'Adityahridaya'. He is the most holy and the destroyer of all enemies. Its chanting leads to victory. This is eternally inexhaustible and supreme welfare stotra.

5. सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम्॥५॥

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam। cintāśokapraśamanamāyurvardhanamuttamam॥5॥

There is also Mars of all Mars. This destroys all sins. It is the best means of eradicating worry and grief and prolonging life.

6. रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम्। पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्॥६॥

raśmimantaṃ samudyantaṃ devāsuranamaskṛtam। pūjayasva vivasvantaṃ bhāskaraṃ bhuvaneśvaram॥6॥

Lord Surya is adorned with his infinite rays (Rashmiman). He is the eternal riser (Samudyan), saluted by the gods and demons, famous by the name Vivasvan, the spreader of light (Bhaskar) and the lord of the world (Bhuvaneshwar). You worship him through these name mantras.

7. सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः। एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः॥७॥

sarvadevātmako hyeṣa tejasvī raśmibhāvanaḥ। eṣa devāsuragaṇā~llokān pāti gabhastibhiḥ॥7॥

The entire deity is his form. He is the one who gives power and energy to the world with the amount of effulgence and its rays. They are the ones who follow the whole people including the deities and asuras by spreading their rays.

8. एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः। महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः॥८॥

eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ। mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hyapāṃ patiḥ॥8॥

These are Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Indra, Dhanad (Kubera-god of wealth), Kaal (time), Yama (god of retribution), Soma (moon), Varuna (ruler of waters),

9. पितरो वसवः साध्या अश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः। वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाः प्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः॥९॥

pitaro vasavaḥ sādhyā aśvinau maruto manuḥ। vāyurvahniḥ prajāḥ prāṇa ṛtukartā prabhākaraḥ॥9॥

Pitra (ancestors), Vasu (the forces of nature), Sadhya, Ashwinikumar (physicians of god), Maruts (wind gods) Marudgan, Manu (progenitor of the human race), Vayu (god of wind) , Agni (Vahni = fire), Praja, Prana, the manifestation of the seasons and are the beams of Prabha.

10. आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान्। सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः॥१०॥

ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān। suvarṇasadṛśo bhānurhiraṇyaretā divākaraḥ॥10॥

Their names are Aditya (Aditiputra), Savita (creator of the world), Surya, (omnipotent), Khaga (moving in the sky), Prasha (nourisher), Gabhastiman (Luminous - the nourisher with rain), Suvarnasadru (the possessor) of golden rays that are brilliant having the golden seed), Bhanu (illuminator), Hiranyreta (seed of origin of the universe), Divakar (dispersing the light of day by dispelling the darkness of night)

11. हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान्। तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्डकोंऽशुमान्॥११॥

haridaśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ saptasaptirmarīcimān। timironmathanaḥ śambhustvaṣṭā mārtāṇḍakoṃ'śumān॥11॥

Haridashva (Horse in color, sweeping in all directions), Sahasrarchi (Adorned with a thousand rays), One with seven horses, Marichiman (Adorned with rays), Destroyer of darkness (Timironmathanah = destroyer of darkness), Shambhu (Origin of well-being), Tvashta (the remover of the sorrows of the devotees), Martandaka (the one who gives life to the universe - who is infuser of life in the cosmic egg), Anshuman (bearer of rays)

12. हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः। अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः॥१२॥

hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śiśirastapano bhāskaro raviḥ। agnigarbho'diteḥ putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śiśiranāśanaḥ॥12॥

Hiranyagarbha (Brahma - who is a golden foetus), Sisirastapano (destroyer of cold), Ahaskar (Dinkar - who brings the day), Ravi (praised by all - eulogised by all), Agnigarbhaऽditeh Putraha (conceiving fire in the womb) Son of Aditi, the conch shell (ananda form and pervasive), shishiranashanah (the destroyer of frost)

13. व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः। घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः॥१३॥

vyomanāthastamobhedī ṛgyajuḥsāmapāragaḥ। ghanavṛṣṭirapāṃ mitro vindhyavīthīplavaṅgamaḥ॥13॥

Vyomnatha (lord of the sky), Tamobhedi (destroyer of darkness), Transcendant of Rigveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda, Ghanavrishti: (the giver of thick rain), Apam Mitra (friend of water - the creator of water), Vindhyaveethiplavangamah (the one who swiftly crosses the sky)

14. आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः। कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः॥१४॥

ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarvatāpanaḥ। kavirviśvo mahātejāḥ raktaḥ sarvabhavodbhavaḥ॥14॥

Atapi (radiator of heat), Mandali (adorned with a circle of rays - bearer of rays), Mrityah (he is death himself), Pingal (brown coloured), Giver of heat, Poet (Trikaldarshi) ), Vishva (the omnipresent), the mahatjasvi, the red-coloured, sarvabhavodbhavah (the cause of the origin of all)

15. नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः। तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते॥१५॥

nakṣatragrahatārāṇāmadhipo viśvabhāvanaḥ। tejasāmapi tejasvī dvādaśātman namo'stu te॥15॥

the lord of the constellations, planets and stars, Vishwabhavan (protector of the world), is very brilliant among the tejasvians and the dvadasatma (manifested in twelve forms). Suryadev famous by all these names! Greetings to you.

16. नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः। ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः॥१६॥

namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ। jyotirgaṇānāṃ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ॥16॥

Greetings to you till Purvagiri (Udayachal) and Paschimgiri (Astachal). Salutations to you, the lord of the Jyotirganas (planets and stars) and the ruler of the day.

17. जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः। नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः॥१७॥

jayāya jayabhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ। namo namaḥ sahasrāṃśo ādityāya namo namaḥ॥17॥

You are the form of Jayaswaroop and the giver of victory and well-being. Green horses are yoking in your chariot. Greetings to you again and again. Lord Surya, adorned with thousands of rays, salutes you again and again. Salutations to you repeatedly, son of Aditi.

18. नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः। नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय प्रचण्डाय नमो नमः॥१८॥

nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ। namaḥ padmaprabodhāya pracaṇḍāya namo namaḥ॥18॥

My salutations to the Ugra (fearful to the non-devotees), Veer (powerful) and Sarang (quick-moving) Sun God. I also pay my respects to Prachanda, the mighty flamboyant who grows the lotus.

19. ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे। भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः॥१९॥

brahmeśānācyuteśāya sūryāyādityavarcase। bhāsvate sarvabhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ॥19॥

In Paratpar form you are also the lord of Lord Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. Sur is your noun, this solar system is your glory, You are full of light, the fire that destroys everyone is your form, I salute to you who take the form of fierceness.

20. तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने। कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः॥२०॥

tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane।kṛtaghnaghnāya devāya jyotiṣāṃ pataye namaḥ॥20॥

O Lord, you are Tamoghnaya (destroyer of ignorance and darkness), you are Himaghnaya (destroyer of inertia and cold) and Shatrughnaya (destroyer of enemies). Amitatmane (the one whose extent is immeasurable - Your form is immeasurable). You are the Kritghnaghnaya (destroyer of ungrateful), the Lord of all lights and the form of God, I bow to you.

21. तप्तचामीकराभाय हरये विश्वकर्मणे। नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे॥२१॥

taptacāmīkarābhāya haraye viśvakarmaṇe। namastamo'bhinighnāya rucaye lokasākṣiṇe॥21॥

Lord, you are like the golden gold, you are Hari (the remover of ignorance), you are Vishwakarma (the creator of the world), tamolbhinighnaya (the destroyer of tamas), ruchaye (the cause of all actions), and lokasakshina (the destroyer of tamas). Witnesses of the world), I bow to you.

22. नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तमेव सृजति प्रभुः। पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः॥२२॥

nāśayatyeṣa vai bhūtaṃ tameva sṛjati prabhuḥ। pāyatyeṣa tapatyeṣa varṣatyeṣa gabhastibhiḥ॥22॥

O Raghunandan! It is Lord Surya who destroys, creates and maintains all the beings. Those who with their rays (gabhastibhih) do paytyesh (dry water), they do taptyesh (transporting heat) and varstyesh (raining).

23. एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः। एष चैवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम्॥२३॥

eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ। eṣh caivāgnihotraṃ ca phalaṃ caivāgnihotriṇām॥23॥

Being internally situated in all the ghosts, they remain awake even when they are asleep. These are the fruits of Agnihotra (the sacrificial fire) and the Worshipper of the Agnihotra.

24. देवाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च। यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्वेषु परमप्रभुः॥२४॥

devāśca kratavaścaiva kratūnāṃ phalameva ca। yāni kṛtyāni lokeṣu sarveṣu paramaprabhuḥ॥24॥

These are the deities (who take part in the yajna), the fruits of the yajnas and sacrifices. I am fully capable of giving the fruits of all the actions that take place in all the worlds.

25. एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च। कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव॥२५॥

enamāpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca। kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścinnāvasīdati rāghava॥25॥

Hey Raghav! In calamity, in trouble, in kantareshu (in the inaccessible path) and on the occasion of any other fear, a person who chants this sun god, he does not have to suffer.

26. पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रे देवदेवं जगत्पतिम्। एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यति॥२६॥

pūjayasvainamekāgre devadevaṃ jagatpatim। etat triguṇitaṃ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyati॥26॥

That's why you worship this god, Jagadishwar, by being concentrated. By chanting this (Adityahridaya Stotra) thrice, you will win the battle.

27. अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं जहिष्यसि। एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम्॥२७॥

asmin kṣaṇe mahābāho rāvaṇaṃ tvaṃ jahiṣyasi। evamuktvā tato'gastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam॥27॥

Great! You will be able to kill Ravana in battle at this time. Saying this, Agastya ji left just as he had come.

28. एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत् तदा। धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान्॥२८॥

etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko'bhavat tadā। dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān॥28॥

Hearing this (guidance), the radiant and powerful Rama was relieved of his sorrow. Filled with joy and self-control, Raghava (Rama) embraced it in his heart.

29. आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वेदं परं हर्षमवाप्तवान्। त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्॥२९॥

ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvedaṃ paraṃ harṣamavāptavān। trirācamya śucirbhūtvā dhanurādāya vīryavān॥29॥

Rama looked at the sun with devotion and recited this hymn thrice which make him full of joy. At the end of the hymn, Rama raised his bow and got ready to fight with Ravana.

30. रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा जयार्थं समुपागमत्।>सर्वयत्नेन महता वृतस्तस्य वधेऽभवत्॥३०॥

rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā jayārthaṃ samupāgamat। sarvayatnena mahatā vṛtastasya vadhe'bhavat॥30॥

Seeing Ravana, he (Rama) became joyous in spirit and prepared for victory. With great effort and determination, he was committed to Ravana's defeat.

31. अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः। निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति॥३१॥

atha raviravadannirīkṣya rāmaṃ muditamanāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ। niśicarapatisaṃkṣayaṃ viditvā suragaṇamadhyagato vacastvareti॥31॥

At that time, Lord Surya, standing in the midst of the gods, looked pleased and looked at Shri Ramchandraji and, knowing the time of destruction of Ravana, the demon king, was near and said joyfully - 'Hurry now!'

Recitation Process

  1. Take a bath early in the morning, preferably at sunrise.
  2. Face east or towards the rising sun.
  3. Light a lamp or diya, preferably with ghee.
  4. Recite the stotra with focus and devotion, optionally 3, 9, or 11 times.
  5. Offer water (Arghya) to Surya if possible.
