The soul is the essence of pure consciousness and bliss. The power of the soul is called the chiti-shakti. The consciousness that is reflected in the mind, intellect, consciousness, ego, subtle and gross body is just the aura of the chiti-shakti reflected in them, which creates a false sense of presence. Understand it in this way that the soul is the illuminator, consciousness is its light and the mind is the object getting illuminated. Therefore, it is not completely correct to consider the soul as consciousness.
In Shambhavopaay, the seeker imposes the soul in consciousness. Due to which, after enough practice, he is able to experience the difference between the mind and consciousness like light and the object of illumination. Then the seeker moves his goal from the mind to focus it on consciousness. Consciousness is a path to reach the soul. Our body, breath, mind, and senses are not the soul. Rather, the soul is that which experiences all these and still which is beyond all these.
According to Shaivism, the power of the Supreme Lord (Ishwar) is called Chaitanya, and this power is the soul of every being. This Chaitanya is present in everything, whether living or non-living, and acts according to its own will. It does as it pleases, this is its freedom, and this is its Chaitanya. When we recognize our consciousness, we experience happiness and contentment. All this is the play of the Lord, in which He does not need any external help, because He is completely independent by Himself.
Abstract
By understanding that consciousness is our essence, the seeker moves towards spiritual awakening.
